Recently, our relationship with food changed drastically. Our awareness is expanding. Shouldn’t we know about the things we put in our mouths three times a day? Doesn’t that just make sense? This has nothing to do with being trendy, localvores, whatever. This has to do with a deeper conviction and concern for our future babies. Our health, their health. Our future community.

One of our favorite authors, Jonathan Safran Foer, wrote an eye-opening book called Eating Animals. We checked it out at the library and read it. We watched the well-made documentary Food, Inc. We invested in a $1.50 hardback copy of Barbara Kingsolver’s Animal, Vegetable, Miracle at one of our new favorite thrift shops in Jamaica Plain. It sure broke the bank, but we thought it was worth it.

Another big investment was a full farmshare through a local CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) at Silverbrook Farm. Last week we picked up our first share. Today we picked up our second. There’s dirt on the squash and slugs in the cabbage. Amen.

Our vegetables and herbs are thriving in the overgrown backyard of our apartment. Lettuce is almost ready to pick. Tomato is growing tall and strong. Peas are…. well, not so good. But still!

These are some things we have eaten recently as we explore new, enlightened avenues of consumption. We are still transitioning and learning.

Okay, so these strawberries were from the supermarket–they were probably shipped from California and are abnormally large. They are white inside. They do not taste like much. Wait until you see the ones we got from the Farm!!!!! I just wish you could taste them. Mmmmmmm…. and Blueberries too!

Of course, we allot some dollars to an alcohol budget each month. We don’t go out much, but enjoy staying in and trying new things. Vermont brewery Magic Hat is one of our favorites. Make a toast for any occasion!

This was one of my “on the fly” meals. I called it finger food dinner. Homemade black bean dip, sweet potato wedges, local tomato, arugula, parmesan. Basil from our garden! Squash was from the supermarket, but we can’t have everything right?

I whipped up some quick shortbread to go alongside one (not local) mango. Delicious. And pretty too!
